Description: Coffeyville, Kansas native Bruce A. McKinney began his career as an activist in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) community during the 1960s while still a student in Coffeyville. During college, he was active in Wichita State University's Student Homophile Association. After college McKinney continued his activism in the community and began his archive, collecting items of significance related to the LGBT community both in and outside of Kansas. This collection reflects McKinney's involvement in the community as an activist and an archivist. It includes McKinney's personal notebooks, organization papers, newspaper and magazine serials, posters, and other memorabilia. It also contains the papers of both Rob Gutzman and Steve Wheeler, whose papers were donated to McKinney's archive posthumously.

Description: The Myth of the Modern Homosexual demolishes the myth that "the homosexual" was invented in modern times. With careful reasoning supported by wide-ranging scholarship, cultural historian Rictor Norton exposes the fallacies of "social constructionist" theories that currently dominate lesbian and gay studies, and argues the case for the autonomy of queer identities and culture. Addressing the general (queer) reader in clear jargon-free terms, the author unashamedly sites himself within the "essentialist" camp, and presents the evidence that queers are part of a centuries-old history, possessing a unified historical cultural identity.

Description: TWO SPIRITS interweaves the tragic story of a mother’s loss of her son with a revealing look at a time when the world wasn’t simply divided into male and female, and many Native American cultures held places of honor for people of integrated genders. Fred Martinez was nádleehí, a male-bodied person with a feminine nature, a special gift according to his ancient Navajo culture. Description: The 2-Spirited People of the 1st Nations were created to honour their ancestral past and reclaim their Aboriginal identity. Since European colonization, the existence of the Two Spirit community has been systematically denied and culturally alienated from the Aboriginal identity. 2-Spirit members bear witness to this activity in the form of racism, sexism and homophobia in the courts, the streets, the education system, and the media and in other lesbian and gay organizations within the dominant Canadian society. They provide prevention education and support for 2-Spirit, including First Nations, metis and Inuit people living with or at risk for HIV and related co-infections in the Greater Toronto Area and base their work on indigenous philosophies of wholistic health and wellness.

Description: BAAITS is a community-based volunteer organization offering culturally relevant activities for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Native Americans, their families and friends. Two-Spirit refers to the commonly shared notion among many Native American tribes that some individuals naturally possessed and manifested both a masculine and feminine spiritual qualities. American society commonly identifies Two-Spirit People as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual or Transgender. Bay Area American Indian Two-Spirits comes together to socialize, share and network in an alcohol and drug-free environment. BAAITS sees itself as an organization for Two-Spirit people to explore their rich heritage in a safe environment. To that end, BAAITS is committed to offering culturally relevant activities for LGBT individuals of Native American ancestry and their families and friends.

Fred Martinez was nádleehí, a male-bodied person with a feminine nature, a special gift according to his ancient Navajo culture. He was one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history when he was brutally murdered at 16. Two Spirits explores the life and death of this boy who was also a girl, and the essentially spiritual nature of gender.

Description: Two Spirit people have a long history among Indigenous people across Canada. Before first contact with European colonizers, most Indigenous people recognized the importance of Two Spirit individuals and the special responsibility bestowed on them by the Creator. At times they were visionaries, healers, medicine people and leaders of their communities. Two Spirit people were respected as equal and vital members of Indigenous societies. There are individuals documented in history, great women who took wives and carried the bow and men carrying out duties usually assigned to women. Nevertheless, the impact of colonization has been long lasting; suppressing Two Spirit traditions and roles and leaving generations of Two Spirit people suffering from multiple layers of discrimination and stigma. Two Spirit youth are particularly at risk. Some find themselves shut out of community gatherings; disowned or ostracized from their families and communities. Schools are no strangers to issues of victimization toward Two Spirit students, who are often targeted and maltreated as members of both a sexual and visible minority. Two Spirit youth may feel unsafe and unwelcome at school thus teachers and school administrators can play an invaluable role in addressing and alleviating some of these issues. As such, this resource hopes to provide a brief but informative window into the challenges that many Two Spirit students face within educational settings as well as contribute practical suggestions that teachers can use to begin addressing these multi layered issues.

Description: Tomson Highway is the proud son of legendary caribou hunter and world championship dogsled racer, Joe Highway, and artist-in-her-own-right (as bead-worker and quilt-maker extraordinaire), Pelagie Highway. A full-blood Cree, he is a registered member of the Barren Lands First Nation, the village for which is called Brochet (pronounced "Bro-shay") and which village is located in northern Manitoba where it meets Saskatchewan and what is now called Nunavut. Today, he writes novels, plays, and music for a living. Having studied music and English literature at the Universities of Manitoba (Winnipeg) and Western Ontario (London), as well as in England, he earned both his Bachelor of Music Honours (Piano Performance major, 1975) and the equivalent of a Bachelor of Arts (English major, 1976), both from "Western."

Description: Kent Monkman (b. 1965) is an interdisciplinary Cree visual artist. A member of Fisher River Cree Nation in Treaty 5 Territory (Manitoba), he lives and works in New York City and Toronto. Known for his thought-provoking interventions into Western European and American art history, Monkman explores themes of colonization, sexuality, loss, and resilience—the complexities of historic and contemporary Indigenous experiences—across painting, film/video, performance, and installation. Monkman’s gender-fluid alter ego Miss Chief Eagle Testickle often appears in his work as a time-traveling, shape-shifting, supernatural being who reverses the colonial gaze to challenge received notions of history and Indigenous peoples.

This panel, moderated by Community Health Sciences graduate student Danielle Hart, provides an opportunity for Two Spirit teachings to be shared, and centers the Two Spirit experience with healthcare, which is fraught with homophobia/transphobia in addition to racism.

Description: In 2020, E2S won the bid with the International Council of Two Spirit Societies (ICTSS) to host the first ever ITSG in the virtual world. Description: Marjorie Beaucage is a Two-Spirit Métis Auntie, filmmaker, ‘art-ivist’ and educator, a land protector and a water walker. Born in Vassar, Manitoba, to a large Métis family, Marjorie has dedicated her life’s work to creating social change, working to give people the tools for creating possibilities and right relations. For Marjorie, story is medicine. Her more than 40 films hold space for difference, giving voice to those often unheard in mainstream stories. Her last project, Reducing the Harms of Colonialism, addressed harm reduction—six portraits of people who made it through. Her recent book, leave some for the birds, documents her own movements for justice.

Description: Carole S. LaFavor (1942–2011) was an Ojibwe novelist, Native American rights activist and nurse. Known for her HIV/AIDS activism, she was featured in Mona Smith's 1988 film Her Giveway about her experiences living with the disease. Her two novels, Along the Journey River and Evil Dead Center were both published by Firebrand Books and her essay "Walking the Red Road" appears in the anthology Positive Women: Voices of Women Living with AIDS edited by Andrea Rudd and Darien Taylor.

Description: Gwen Benaway is a trans girl of Anishinaabe and Métis descent. She has published three collections of poetry, Ceremonies for the Dead, Passage, and Holy Wild, and was the editor for an anthology of fantasy short stories, Maiden Mother and Crone: Fantastical Trans Femmes. Her writing has been critically acclaimed and widely published in Canada. She was a finalist for the Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ writers from the Writer’s Trust of Canada, the Lambda Literary Award for Trans Poetry, and the National Magazine Awards and Digital Publishing Awards for her personal essay, A Body Like A Home. Her fourth collection of poetry, Aperture, is forthcoming from Book*hug in Spring 2020. She is also currently editing a book of creative non-fiction, trans girl in love, forthcoming from Strange Light in 2020. She lives in Toronto, Ontario and is a Ph.D student at the University of Toronto in the Women and Gender Studies Institute.

Description: In 2023, the LGBT Purge Fund developed the interpretative content for the 2SLGBTQI+ National Monument. This content includes the words, quotes, images and captions that will tell the story of 2SLGBTQI+ discrimination in Canada, including the colonial roots of homophobia, biphobia and transphobia and the cruelty of the Canadian government during the LGBT Purge. It also tells stories of community resistance and resilience and urges vigilance in the face of ongoing hate. Key messages will be communicated within the monument’s site on an entry panel and on a long interpretive wall. Two on-site freestanding panels will also describe the design of the Monument and how it connects to the overall project.

From her early, often harrowing memories of life and abuse in a remote Ojibwa community riven by poverty and alcoholism, Chacaby’s story is one of enduring and ultimately overcoming the social, economic, and health legacies of colonialism.

Description: The bulk of the collection consists of materials relating to LGBT American Indians, Two-Spirit people and American Indian history collected by activist Randy Burns, co-founder with Barbara Cameron, of Gay American Indians (GAI). The collection includes materials related to Burns, GAI and other LGBT Indian organizations across the United States and Canada, including a typescript of “Living the Spirit: A Gay American Indian Anthology” by the GAI History Project. One major topic is AIDS, communities of color and cultural competency. There are facilitator’s manuals for safer sex workshops, and materials from the National Native American AIDS Prevention Center, the People of Color HIV/AIDS Advisory Committee and the Third World AIDS Advisory Task Force. Newsletters in the collection include “In the Wind,” “Native AIDS Brief,” the American Indian/Alaska Native Community AIDS Network Newsletter, and “Positively Native.” The collection also contains materials by and about Mohawk poet Maurice Kenny, anthropologist Walter Williams and scholar Will Roscoe. The collection has drafts and typescripts of Roscoe’s papers, including several pieces he wrote with Harry Hay, and correspondence and ephemera related to his work. Other topics and organizations represented in the collection reflects Burns’ activism in the Indian, anti-racist and LGBT communities and include materials from Gay Freedom Day and Bay Area Gay Liberation (BAGL), such as “Criticism of the June 28th Union.” Types of materials include academic papers, correspondence and memos, fact sheets and statistics, flyers, meeting minutes, newsletters, programs, reports and buttons.

Description: Includes correspondence, diaries and other writings, poetry, photographs, and video depicting the life of Robert Lynch. Robert Lynch was born with the name Larry O'Neal Lynch on 14 September 1947 near Enfield, in Halifax County, eastern North Carolina. He was the oldest of the five children of Izetta Hedgepeth Lynch and Randolph Lynch. After graduating from Eastman High School in Enfield, North Carolina and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he attended Harvard Law School. After practicing as an attorney in New York City, where he specialized in corporate and securities law, he became involved with the Dance Theatre of Harlem. In August of 1975, he returned to rural North Carolina, living for a time at "Redbird Cabin," a neglected cottage in the woods not far from the home in which he was a child. Lynch referred to this as his "Thoreauvian period"; there, for an especially intensive period of four years, and for the rest of his life, he wrote poetry, kept close and introspective poetic and impressionistic diaries, and researched his complex ancestries. In the 1970s, he also travelled and hitchhiked in America and internationally, frequently visiting friends in metropolitan areas. In 1979 he moved into "Izetta House," the home in which he had grown up. By 1980 he was referring to himself as Robert Benjamin Richardson Lynch, though his family and those who had known him as Larry, continued to call him that. He also spent periods of a year or less as the Officer of Housing, Economic Development and Cultural Affairs for Princeville, North Carolina, as Development Director for WVSP Public Radio in Warrenton, North Carolina, and as a consultant to the Dance Theatre of Harlem. In the early 1980s, Lynch became involved in studying and collecting folk art, (or primitive art, or l'art brut), which he referred to as "outsider art." As a field collector and dealer, Lynch acquired examples and assembled a large photographic representation of outsider art, and also created a video on the subject. In 1987 he became aware of having contracted AIDS. Lynch died on 13 March 1989.

Description: Rosalie Favell is a photo-based artist, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Drawing inspiration from her family history and Métis (Cree/English) heritage, she uses a variety of sources, from family albums to popular culture, to present a complex self-portrait of her experiences as a contemporary aboriginal woman. To date Rosalie’s work has explored the relation of photography to issues of identity.

Description: Suicide rates among two-spirited, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered First Nations are not known, but the rates of related risk factors in these groups indicate that the suicide risk is greater than among heterosexual First Nations. Homophobia, isolation and rejection increase the risk of suicide. An individual’s risk can be decreased if he/she is connected to his/her culture and traditions in a way that recognizes the impacts of colonization. First Nations communities can support two-spirited people by providing safe spaces that include and respect them, by standing up for them, and by speaking out about the discrimination they experience. The term two-spirit is used in this resource because it reflects the importance of First Nations culture as well as sex and gender orientation and diversity. However, it is important to respect that individuals may prefer to identify with other terms to reflect their sexual orientation, sex and gender identity, experiences, or preferences.

Description: When Viola Thomas of the Tk’emlúpste Secwépemc nation attended Northwest Community College in Terrace, B.C. in the 1980s, she began participating in monthly lesbian potlucks. Through her work at Theytus Press, Viola promoted Two Spirit Indigenous writers. A long-time activist for murdered and missing Indigenous girls and women, she was the first Two Spirit woman to serve as President of the National Association of Friendship Centres and the United Native Nations Society. In the 1990s, she declined an award offered by Xtra! West on the grounds that the paper, like the rest of the LGBTQ community, had yet to address racism. Rather than give an interview, Viola shared her 7 April 2018 testimony to the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

Description: June is a big month in Canada for awareness around gender and sexual diversity as well as for Indigenous peoples, as Pride Month coincides with both National Indigenous History Month and with National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21. Lindsay Gibson is an Indigenous awareness training advisor with BC Hydro, a Musqueam Indian Band member and executive on BC Hydro's RAIN Network. She brought together two of her favourite people for a discussion around Pride Month and what it means to be out in the workplace and in their community. Simone Lemieux is a BC Hydro hydromechanical engineer and co-chair of the employee-led BC Hydro Pride Network, and Mack Paul is a Musqueam Pride activist who works as a protocol coordinator in the band's protocol and communications department. Gibson joined her friends and BC Hydro Connected newsletter writer Rob Klovance on a Zoom call that zeroed in on the history of the term two-spirit and what it's like to live as a two-spirit person in 2021.

Description: The Feast Centre's aim of decolonizing Indigenous history and research related to sexually transmitted and blood borne infections (STBBI) will continue in this new year. This online session will explore the impact of the seven Euro-Christian churches that imposed western values on Indigenous peoples through the Indian residential and day school era. The recent visit of Pope Francis to Canada to respond to the harms and crimes perpetrated by the Roman Catholic Church against Indigenous children and their families will be the focus of this panel's conversation. The re-emergence of Indigenous values, teachings, and life philosophy will be discussed with regard to 2Spirit/Indigenous LGBTQ people, gender-based violence, feminism, matriarchy, midwifery, gender identity, sexual health research, and reparations.

Description: The Two-Spirited People of Manitoba began in 1986 in Winnipeg. A group of concerned community members came together to support each other and plan community events. We became a non-profit organization in September 2007. We are a community-based organization focused on helping Indigenous LGBTQ/Two-Spirit people improve their lives. With the help of our tireless volunteers, we provide awareness workshops, advocate to prevent homophobia and transphobia, and organize community events. They began their Facebook page to reach out to the wider community.

Description: A community-based needs assessment funded by Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada was conducted following OCAP principles in order to gain specific knowledge of the safety and secuity concerns, the service and support experiences, and the service and support needs of the transgender and Two Spirit people of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. Participants provided quantitative and qualitative data by completing questionnaires. Data was analyzed using Epi Info and content analysis. Twenty-seven of our 75 participants identified as Aboriginal. The assessment shows that participants are at high risk for serious threats to health, quite apart from the needs for access to sex reassignment procedures. Many live in poverty or near-poverty, experience high levels of emotional distress, and high exposure to hostility and violence from a variety of sources in everyday life. Findings were similar in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal participants in many respects, with the Aboriginal participants having higher levels of poverty and correspondingly higher levels of concerns, experiences and needs associated with living in poverty. Levels of known STI and HIV infections are uch higher among participants than in the general population, and especially among male-born Aboriginal participants. Key recommendations include establishing a Centre of Excellence in trans care; an information campaign for trans people throughout the region, distribution of care and referral protocol throughout the health system, trans-competence training for first responders in emergency and police services.

Description: Joshua Whitehead (he/him) is a Two-Spirit, Oji-nêhiyaw member of Peguis First Nation (Treaty 1). He is currently a Ph.D. candidate, lecturer, and Killam scholar at the University of Calgary where he studies Indigenous literatures and cultures with a focus on gender and sexuality. His dissertation, tentatively titled "Feral Fatalisms," is a hybrid narrative of theory, essay, and non-fiction that interrogates the role of "ferality" inherent within Indigenous ways of being (with a strong focus on nêhiyawewin). He is the author of full-metal indigiqueer (Talonbooks 2017) which was shortlisted for the inaugural Indigenous Voices Award and the Stephan G. Stephansson Award for Poetry. He is also the author of Jonny Appleseed (Arsenal Pulp Press 2018) which was long listed for the Giller Prize, shortlisted for the Indigenous Voices Award, the Governor General's Literary Award, the Amazon Canada First Novel Award, the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award, and won the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction and the Georges Bugnet Award for Fiction. Whitehead is currently working on a third manuscript titled, Making Love with the Land to be published with Knopf Canada, which explores the intersections of Indigeneity, queerness, and, most prominently, mental health through a nêhiyaw lens. Currently, he’s working as an editor for the forthcoming Love After the End: Two-Spirit Utopias and Dystopias to be released in 2019. You can find his work published widely in such venues as Prairie Fire, CV2, EVENT, Arc Poetry Magazine, The Fiddlehead, Grain, CNQ, Write, and Red Rising Magazine.

Description: Kent Monkman, born in Canada in 1965, is a Cree artist who is widely known for his provocative interventions into Western European and American art history. He explores themes of colonization, sexuality, loss, and resilience—the complexities of historic and contemporary Indigenous experiences—across a variety of mediums, including painting, film/video, performance, and installation. Monkman’s gender-fluid alter ego Miss Chief Eagle Testickle often appears in his work as a time-traveling, shape-shifting, supernatural being who reverses the colonial gaze to challenge received notions of history and Indigenous peoples.

Description: Born at The Pas on 22 September 1949, son of Roger Carriere and Olive Whitehead, his early years were spent at Cranberry Portage. He travelled extensively throughout his life, eventually settling in Winnipeg. He worked in bush camps as a guide and cook, appreciated for his culinary skills, and also served as a counsellor for group homes and as a native court worker. His life experiences and pride in his Métis culture and upbringing resulted in him writing and publishing a book of poetry entitled White Eagle Speaks: Reflections of Lives and Passing Thoughts (2000). At the time of his death, he had completed two additional volumes and was looking forward to having them published. He died on 17 May 2004.

Description: The Montana Two Spirit Society formed in 1996 through a joint effort by Pride Inc. (Montana’s LGBT advocacy organization) and the Montana Gay Men’s Task Force to conduct an annual Two Spirit Gathering. Over the years, the gathering has grown from a handful of participants to nearly 100 attendees from not only Montana but surrounding states as well. Tribes from all over Turtle Island are represented at the Gathering.

That's why Budget 2019 allocated funding for the first ever Government of Canada fund for LGBTQ2 organizations. His vision spurs him to rediscover the strength of the past to better face the challenges of today. This funny and buoyant film documents his touching journey. Second Stories follows on the heels of the enormously successful First Stories project, which produced 3 separate collections of short films from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
